300 Reasons

It's rare that I want to venture beyond the confines of my living room to see a movie these days.  I often find myself spending the duration of the movie asking myself why did I fork over my hard earned coin to watch people who make their living pretending to be someone they are not, when I can just sit down in front of the tube and turn CSPAN on for the paltry price of my satellite TV service each month.  This past weekend was special.  Not only did I want to watch this movie in the theater but the stars aligned and I was actually able to.  On Sunday, the little boss took a nap, and the big boss have me a furlough.

I was not impressed with Frank Miller's 'Sin City', and because of this I had not intended to see '300' in the theater, but a few weeks ago I read a column linked from Drudge about how the talk about '300' will be whether President Bush is Xerxes or King Leonidas.  The computer geek in me had been dying to see this CGI tweaked movie, but the conservative said the geek can wait for the DVD.  That article convinced the conservative in me to pony up for the flick.  My apologies to the author of the column, I did not book mark it, and I can not recall the title, or where it was published.  The movie does not disappoint the geek or the conservative.  It's Mel Gibson quality, by that I mean it invoked the emotion of a 'Braveheart' or a 'We Were Soldiers' in me.  Yes it is gluttonously filled with gore, but much like 'Braveheart' the gore has purpose unlike those of the Jason, Freddy, and Hellraiser ilk.

I won't bore you with 300 little bullets on why the movie '300' is a mirror of the current state of affairs in the Middle East., but I am going to give a couple.  I'm just going to give you one...   If Iran thinks the work of Hollywood is supporting the U.S. war effort, President Bush must be King Leonidas.  We are fighting for freedom, liberty, justice, and most of all, PEACE.  To quote from the movie Queen Gorgo addresses the Spartan Council to rally support and reinforcements for the King,  "Freedom isn’t free at all. It comes at the highest cost. The cost of blood."

Like 300's Sparta, we are sending our sons and daughters to to pay the price of freedom in blood against the face tyranny and oppression in Iraq and Afghanistan.  The parallel between the current state of affairs, both domestic and abroad, and this movie can not be more clear.  The cost of success can not be any heavier than the blood of freedom.  The consequences of failure can not be more any more grave than the oppression of tyrants.
